It is part of the DNIE Digital Identity Program of the National Police, financed with resources that come from European funds requested through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.
It is a new
identity document that is mandatory in the European
Union. Now, this does not mean that your current ID is no longer valid and you
have to renew it. All documents issued until the end of
July will be valid until their expiration date or until August 3, 2031.
One of the main
characteristics of the new DNI is that its
design is common in all member countries of the European Union to facilitate
mobility and make it easier to identify citizens. In addition, all
the information is written both in the official language of the country and in
English. Although the UK is no longer part of the EU, this language has
been chosen as the most widely used.
Characteristics
of the European DNI
The size of the new
identity document will be exactly the same: 85.60
millimeters wide x 53.98 millimeters high. Now, it includes a
series of modifications on the front and back:
§ Two-letter code: it
is printed in a blue rectangle surrounded by yellow stars, the symbol of the
European Union. In the case of Spain, the code corresponds to the letters
ES.
§ Microchip: DNI 4.0
incorporates a microchip that stores the bearer's photo, fingerprints and
signature, as well as the Electronic Signature and Authentication certificates.
§ Security elements:
taking into account that it contains very private personal information, it has
a series of security elements, some visible and others not. Therefore, it
is much more difficult to fake.
Historical
of validity
The validity period
of the new DNI is between five and ten years. However, countries
can set a validity period of less than five years for identity documents issued
to minors and of more than 10 years for those over 70.

If all goes
according to plan, in a few months citizens will be able
to register their European ID on their mobile phone to be able to use it in
official applications that are being prepared by the European Union and member
countries, such as Spain.
The objective of the
Spanish app is that citizens can leave their physical identity document at home
and simply carry the mobile version not only to prove their identity, but also
to use the electronic signature from the Smartphone.
Meanwhile, the
European Union has a more ambitious approach and wants
the app to also serve to carry out bureaucratic procedures with local, regional
and state administrations.
Rapid
ID
Among the next
steps of the DNIE Digital Identity Program of the National Police is the
Express DNI. It is a semi-automatic dispatch system
that will reduce waiting times.
In addition,
citizens will be able to take the photograph "in situ". It is
also expected to increase the number of posts for updating the electronic DNI
to make it easier for citizens to pay fees with a bank card and renew digital
certificates.
